On Shakespeare

William Shakespeare was a truly great man.
But it seems that teenagers aren't his greatest fans.
When he is mentioned, they make a big fuss
Some complain, some gripe, and some even cuss.
And who can blame them, for the way Shakespeare's taught,
Any chance of his full effect is naught.
For old Will was a writer of plays
The people didn't read much back in his days.
To watch a fight in Hamlet is truly grand,
But reading "[They fight]" is rather bland.
It's a good thing that old Will is dead
Because he never meant for his stuff to be read.
And so, please, teachers, don't be mean.
Shakespeare's not to be read, he is to be seen.
